One of the first official statements by Shinzo Abe’s Japanese government, which formed in late December, caught analysts by surprise. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that his new administration intends to review the official statement made in 1993 by then Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono about the so-called “comfort women,” because it is “desirable for foreign experts and historians to study” the statement.
